I think there is an idea in mind: The animal we choose says more about who we are becoming than who we are.

Two participants said they wanted to be a bird. But what surprised me was this: No one said they wanted to be a dog or even a cat. And that made me pause. Why? Because a dog represents things we say we value — loyalty, presence, devotion.

It made me think.. Maybe we don't naturally pick animals that symbolise attachment or service but instead we choose animals that symbolise power or freedom and that could says something about what we value right now.

When I said I’d be a hippo, I didn’t choose it to be cute. I chose it because it feels grounded. Calm on the surface, but strong underneath. It reflects where I am in life. If you asked me years ago, I might’ve said a bird. But now? I want depth, and security.

So now I’m thinking:

  • If someone chooses a bird, maybe they’re craving freedom.
  • If someone chooses a lion, maybe they want authority.
  • If someone chooses a dog, maybe they value belonging.

And if I choose a hippo?

Maybe I’m choosing calm strength — not loud confidence, but grounded presence.

So here’s the question I’ll leave you with:

What animal would you choose today — and would it be different five years ago?
